Applied Mechanics - The application of mechanics principles to real world problems.

Mechanics - The formulation of rules for predicting the behavior of physical systems (i.e. fluids, structures, mechanisms, mechanical equipment, or individual components of such systems) under the influence of any type of interaction with its environment (i.e. temperature, external force, body force, etc.)

Typical Applied Mechanics Topics:

  • Mechanics of materials including fatigue, fracture mechanics, creep, elasticity, and plasticity.

  • Analysis of stress and strain including finite element analysis and classical calculations.

  • Fluid flow analysis including open and closed channel flow.

  • Behavior of structures or mechanical parts under constant or dynamic loads.

Typical Uses of Applied Mechanics:

Determination of:

  • Component stress or strain for use in design code calculations.

  • Component stress or strain for use in fatigue, fracture, or creep analysis.
